Extension of a community centre with 4 multipurpose spaces

The extension of the Zonneheem Community Centre is realised by the addition of a new low volume that has the same length as the existing building. Between the existing building and the addition an urban joint is created that links the two volumes in three places by glazed passageways. The courtyard spaces between these connections contain the remains of the old front garden and provide the building with light and air. The flexibility of the extension, the use of a roof garden and the well-considered system of sun screening glass panels make this a sustainable building, both socially and environmentally.
