Zonnestraat Mechelen

40 social houses have been integrated into an area on the urban fringe of Mechelen. Each dwelling has its own individual entrance from the street and its own backyard space. This typology of row houses is typical of the area. The project incorporates three quality open spaces, which are linked to each other. Each space has its own distinct identity. The first is a small plaza for the neighbourhood. The second is a green space, filled with trees and a childrens playground. The third area is a pedestrian alley, which links the other two spaces. The whole treathes the atmosphere of a "begrinage", a typical medieval flemish urban form.
